The movie follows a mute student (Dummy in the dubbed version) enrolling in a Shaolin Academy to learn Kung Fu to avenge his father whose death was caused by an unkown . The monk life is very hard. The student has a lot of problems at first but after a period of time he will finally adapt to this style of life. In order to start the fighting training, each student has to wait five years. This does not apply to the mute. Step-be-step, using the help of a drunken monk (Miu Tak San), a visiting female Buddhist (Cheung Bing Yuk), the student will learn balance techniques and the “Ten Shadows Eight Steps”- a way which helps his feet to become lighter-. The final test is very hard and required advanced training. In order to pass this test he will become friend with a prisoner (Kam Kong). The prisoner offer him trainining to imprive his fighting skills in exchange to food and wine. In result of all his hard work, he is sent on a mission to fight the famous "Wooden Men" and deliver a message. The climax is when he find out that the prisoner is the true murderer of his father.
